Transfer Season
2> See the 2008 ANZ Championship Transfer Period Australia The start of the new 2008 ANZ Championship season saw the ten franchises battling it out to make their rosters as strong as possible for the debut season. In Australia, the players from eight Commonwealth Bank Trophy teams were cut down to five ANZ squads. In the south, the Adelaide Thunderbirds pulled off one of the biggest coups, signing Australian Diamonds international Mo'onia Gerrard to team up with English import Geva Mentor in defence. While on attack they re-signed top players Kristen Hughes, Natalie Medhurst and Natalie von Bertouch. The Thunderbirds's major losses were Laura von Bertouch and Peta Scholz, both retired after 2007. The NSW Swifts had to fight back to the loss of Liz Ellis who retired from netball, and Gerrard to the Thunderbirds, with the defender leaving a huge hole in the Sydney teams defence. Coach Julie Fitzgerald rallied on a youthful looking side, but did add some experience with Australian netballers Catherine Cox, Susan Pratley, Kim Green and Selina Gilsenan being added as well. In Melbourne, the new Melbourne Vixens would bring the best players from Victoria, using former CBT teams the Phoenix and Kestrels as the main feeders. Phoenix stars Sharelle McMahon, Natasha Chokljat and Bianca Chatfield were combined with Caitlin Thwaites and Julie Corletto from the Kestrels to make the Vixens the strongest Australian team on paper. Up north at the Queensland Firebirds, the Brisbane based team re-signed the majority of its CBT team from 2007 including Australian capped players Laura Geitz and Lauren Nourse. Along with the Aussie duo, came two of the very best imports in the competition. Tall, 1.96 cm shooter Romelda Aiken and England Midcourter Tamsin Greenway who were also added to coach Vicki Wilson's team. The West Coast Fever named a fairly young squad for the 2008 competition, looking to be the most youthful of the Australian teams. Tall developing shooter Caitlin Bassett, and talented Goal Keeper Susan Fuhrmann were mixed in with Australian veteran Ingrid Dick and England players Ama Agbeze and Karen Atkinson, to form the new look West Coast Fever. New Zealand Like Australia, New Zealand's professional player pool was about to be decreased from 96 players to 60. Forming five franchises, from the previous eight of the National Bank Cup, was always going to be hard and there was fierce negotiations between the teams to try to sign the top players. Down south at the Southern Steel, the dynasty of the Sting was over, and many of the top players from the south saw the time as the right to retire. Southern stars Adine Wilson, Lesley Rumball, Belinda Colling and Donna Wilkins all called time on their playing careers, while Wilkins would later return as the Steel's assistant. Coach Roobyn Broughton was left with the huge task of rebuilding. Top Sting players Daneka Wipiiti, Liana Leota, Wendy Frew, Erika Burgess and Megan Hutton returned, along with the addition of Katrina Grant and Debbie White from the Rebels, and also the injection of former Silver Fern Jenny-May Coffin. 2007 Otago Rebels captain Jodi Brown decided against signing with Steel, opting to play instead for the Canterbury Tactix. At the Tactix, with the inclusion of Brown, she was joined by Ferns Maree Bowden and Julie Seymour, as the top player from the Christchurch team. In Wellington, the Pulse was the weakest franchise on paper. Apart from marquee signing, English defender Sonia Mkoloma and Samoan captain Frances Solia, the Pulse had no real players who would have the ability to compete at the ANZ level. The Waikato/BOP Magic, with six current Silver Ferns were by far the strongest of the New Zealand teams. The trio of Irene van Dyk, Laura Langman and Casey Williams would lead the way for the franchise. The Magic also welcomed Maria Tutaia to the Waikato, after previously playing for the Auckland Diamonds in the National Bank Cup. The Northern Mystics looked as a team with plenty of potential. The mix of Diamonds and Northern Force players surely would bring a quality side together, and it did. Shooters Catherine Latu, Jade Topia and Paula Griffin all signed with the Mystics and have the ability to step up at the top level. In the middle, Temepara George led the way, and in defence Sheryl Scanlan, Leana de Bruin and Villi Davu all re-signed with Auckland to bring a promising team together for Coach Yvonne Willering. Notes
2> ^ The 2008 rules specified that games must play to a result, excluding the possibility of a draw. However, see note for Round 10 (below) for a singular exception in which a game was declared a draw. ^ Game called off due to stadium leak. Despite West Coast leading 33–16 prior to the decision, the game was declared a draw, with each team receiving one competition point. The goals scored by each team were included in the competition ladder. [edit]
